Top 10 K Pop Girl Groups of 2023

The popularity of K-pop girl groups has been on the rise for the last decade. However, in the last couple of years increasingly more girl groups are trying to find their way to the top. What sets them apart? In simple terms, we’re talking about talent, beauty, charisma, and everything in between. Back in the 90’s, famous groups like Fin K.L, S.E.S. and Baby V.O.X dominated Korea’s top charts. But let’s have a closer look at the 10 K-Pop girl groups that have dominated 2023.

1. miss A

Ever since they launched “Bad Girl Good Girl”, miss A had potential to go big. The group went a bit more aggressive when they launched “Only You”. However, the track caught on, and many of miss A’s K-pop fans reacted positively to the change. After paying tribute to Destiny’s Child by releasing their own version of “I Don’t Need a Man”, one of the group’s singer, Jia, left in 2016. Regardless, miss A remains one of the most successful K-pop girl groups of 2023.

2. Lovelyz

Lovelyz made their debut as a promising K-pop girl group in 2014, when they released their first album Girl’s Invasion. Upon the group’s launch, there were 8 members and to many people’s surprise, still are: Sujeong, Baby Soul, Yien, Mijoo, Jiae Key, JIN, Kei, and Jisoo. Famous for their cheerful attitude and sweet appeal, Lovelyz launched a second album that had tremendous success, “Ah-Choo”. The song managed to remain in the most important Korean music charts throughout 2015 and 2016.

3. Sistar

Famous for their charismatic, sexy appeal and steamy music videos, Sistar is a K-pop group made by Starship Entertainment. Formed in 2010, the 4 members (Bora, Dasom, Hyolyn, and Dasom) made their debut when releasing their single “Touch My Body”. Among other famous songs released by Sistar, we should also mention “Alone”, “Loving U”, and “Give It To Me”. One of Sistar’s most successful songs, “So Cool” managed to get on Number 1 of the Billboard Korea K-Pop 100 single chart. Throughout 2023, Sistar continued to impress, marking themselves as one of the most solid K-pop girls groups in the country.
4. AOA

AOA is short for “Ace of Angels”. The K-pop girl group was founded by FNC Entertainment, and it was initially made of 7 beautiful and talented singers: Jimin, Yuna, Choa, Seolhyun, Hyejeong, Mina, and Chanmi. Upon their grand debut, the group focused on dancing, with some of the members playing musical instruments. The founders of the group, the FNC, explained the concept, portraying them as the”seven full angels”. The group’s first album, “Short Hair” topped the charts and ranked No. 1 in 2014. Also, it ranked No. 8 on Billboard’s “Most Viewed K Pop Music Videos Worldwide” the same year. In 2023, AOA released “Angel’s Knock”, their first Korean studio album that enjoyed tremendous success.

5. Gfriend

Incredibly talented and acclaimed by K-pop fans around the world, Gfriend was formed in 2015 by Source Music. The group features charming faces and powerful voices, a killer combo that dictates the recipe for success in the industry. Umji, Yuju, Yerin, SinB, Yerin, and Eunha are the 5 members forming the group. Gfriend won several awards back in 2015 in amateur female singer competitions, but they’ve kept going rising to stardom at the end of 2016, when one of Gfriend’s songs, “Rough”, became one of the year’s most downloaded songs of 2016.

6. Apink

Apink is yet another popular and successful K-pop girl group that made themselves known throughout 2023. The founder of the group is Plan A Entertainment who believed the music of 6 talented girls could break the charts. Apink is made of  Yoon Bo-mi, Park Cho-rong, Son Na-eun, Jeong Eun-ji, Oh Ha-young, and Kim Nam-joo.  The group’s style is quite unique because instead of focusing on sex-appeal and beauty, Apink centers on innocence, high-school, girly like appeal. Rather than make videos with the girls dancing, the group feels more comfortable portraying a more pure and innocent image. As far as the music is concerned, Apink has managed to grab the attention of K-pop fans with their cheery lyrics, vintage sound, and vibrant rhythm.

7. Red Velvet

Red velvet is more than a delicious cake in the K-pop music industry. There’s a girl group with the same name that managed to grab attention in its inception back in 2016 upon the release of the hit drama “Descendants of the Sun”. Red Velvet is made up of 5 girls: Wendy, Seulgi, Yeri, Irene, and Joy. When the group made their grand debut, their song “Happiness” got both national and international recognition. The dance, lively music, and catchy lyrics caught the attention of K-pop fans who believed the group had tremendous potential to go big. And they did. The girls received 13 music awards in several categories, including choreography, best female dance performance, and best female group.

8. SNSD

Among the actual queens of K-pop music, there’s SNSD, also known as Girls’ Generation. Apart from being an influential girl group of 2023, what’s staggering is that the band was founded in 2007. For nearly a decade, the girls have shared tremendous success and fame, which in time has made them become even stronger. SNSD is made up of 8 talented members: Taeyeon, Hyoyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Yoona, Yuri, Sooyoung, and Seohyun. As far as their signature musical style, the group is famous for their electro-pop style with hints of EDM, R&B, and hip-hop. SNSD’s popularity throughout the years brought the girls a well-deserved title: The Singers of the Nation.

9. Black Pink

Black Pink is a K-pop girl group known for their diverse, catchy, and vibrant music style. The group blends R&B accents with hip-hop and EDM to make their music sound fresh and appeal to a wider audience. Many K-pop fans know Black Pink as one of the most innovative and solid girl groups. Their official debut was made in 2016, upon the launch of their single album titled “Square One”. Black Pink is made up of 4 beautiful and talented girls: Lisa, Rose, Jennie, and Jisoo. When “Square One” was launched it instantly reached the Billboard World Digital Songs chart, where it grabbed No. 1. “Whistle” topped the charts. Apart from being one of the most listened tracks of the year, it was also the most downloaded by fans.

10. Twice

Last but not least, we have Twice, a K-pop girl group formed by JYP Entertainment in 2015 during a reality show called “Sixteen”. Unlike most K-pop groups, Twice has 9 amazing members: Nayeon, Momo, Jeongyeon, Mina, Sana, Jihyo, Tzuyu Dahyun, and Chaeyoung. Since the initial debut of the group, Twice released a highly-successful mini album called “The Story Begins”. The track that grabbed the attention of the fans, “Like OHH-AHH” got 50 million views in just 5 months since launch. The track became one of the most watched music videos in the K-pop industry. The group’s latest single “Knock Knock”, released on February 20 this year, got an incredible 17 million views on the second day of the release.
The K-pop music industry is on first. Girl groups are now more powerful than ever before because their music can really speak to the fans.
