Editor’s Picks: 7 of the Best Face Mists Made with Natural Ingredients
It's no secret that I'm partial to natural beauty products—even when it comes to face mists.
Now that we've talked about all the reasons to use them, I'm going to share what I look for in a face mist, along with the top picks on my list.
How to Choose a Face Mist
Here's how I go about choosing a face mist.
- Silicone-free and polymer-free: Not for safety reasons (these plastic materials sit on top of the skin instead of absorbing), but because they can build up in pores, triggering dehydration and acne.
- PUFA-free and mineral oil-free: Polyunsaturated fatty acids, a.k.a. PUFAs, include oils such as grape seed, soybean, sunflower, safflower, almond and sesame. I avoid them in ALL beauty products because they oxidize (go rancid) from heat and air, which promotes aging. I also avoid mineral oil because it can clog pores and more.
- Alcohol-free: Alcohol denat (denatured alcohol) and ethanol are drying. However, fatty alcohols such as cetyl, cetearyl and stearyl are fine. Propylene glycol is also a fatty alcohol, but can be irritating.
- Fragrance-free or natural fragrance: Synthetic fragrance chemicals are the number one culprit behind product reactions such as contact dermatitis (look for the word “parfum”). Essential oils are safer, but should come last in the ingredients list; avoid them if you have sensitive skin.
On to the face mists I recommend most!
Éminence Neroli Age Corrective Hydrating Mist
Ingredients: Coconut Water, Natural Retinol Alternative Complex (Chicory Root Oligosaccharides, Vegetable Glycerin, Tara Tree Gum, Gluconolactone, Sodium Benzoate), PhytoCellTec (SwissGreen Apple Cell Culture Extract, Xanthan Gum, Vegetable Glycerin, Lecithin), Vegetable Glycerin, Panthenol, Coconut Milk, Carrot Extract, Biocomplex (Vitamin A, Vitamin C Ester, Vitamin E, Coenzyme Q10, Alpha Lipoic Acid), Potassium Alginate, Salicylic Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Neroli Oil.
If you invest in just one face mist, I'd go with the Éminence Neroli Age Corrective Hydrating Mist. Suitable for all skin types, it delivers a fine mist of non-oily hydration with an addictive orange blossom scent. Plus, it has a plant-based retinol alternative and green apple stem cells for an added plumping effect. I'm on my second bottle now—it's my all-time favourite!
Pai Lotus & Orange Blossom BioAffinity Skin Tonic
Ingredients: Aqua, Nelumbo Nucifera (Lotus) Root Water, Citrus Aurantium Amara (Orange Blossom) Flower Water*, Glycerin*, Rosa Damascena Flower Water*, Sodium Anisate, Sodium Levulinate, Lactic Acid. *Organically Produced Ingredient.
If your skin's on the sensitive side, Pai Lotus & Orange Blossom BioAffinity Skin Tonic is one of your best bets. Rich in amino acids and minerals, it drenches your face with pH-balanced liquid moisture (and it, too, has a subtle neroli scent). This would be a great choice for calming redness.
Caudalie Grape Water
Ingredients: Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Fruit Water, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Juice, Nitrogen.
As an alternative to thermal water mists, which can be drying, I like Caudalie Grape Water. Extracted from grapes in Bordeaux, France (which are high in polysaccharides, potassium and mineral salts), it's both hydrating and soothing. It is even said to help strengthen the skin barrier and has an anti-inflammatory effect, making it ideal for super-sensitive types.
Derma E Hydrating Mist With Hyaluronic Acid
Ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid; Actimoist® Bio-1), Ascorbyl Palmitate (C-Ester), Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Organic Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract* (.1%), Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract* (.1%), Allantoin, Polysorbate, Potassium Sorbate, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Plumeria Blossom Fragrance.
With its hyaluronic acid, glycerin and panthenol, Derma E Hydrating Mist With Hyaluronic Acid is an excellent choice if you need oil-free moisture. However, skip this one if you are sensitive, because of the phenoxyethanol (a preservative that can be irritating for some people) and the fragrance.
Arcona Desert Mist
Ingredients: Agua (Distilled Water), Hamamelis Virginiana Extract (Witch Hazel), Glycerine, Mucin, Na PCA, Tocotrienols (Vitamin E), Glutathione, L Ascorbic Acid, Selenium, Acetyl Cysteine, Wild Marjoram Extract (Origanum Vulgare).
What makes Arcona Desert Mist unique is that it forms a protective barrier on the skin to lock in hydration and defend against environmental damage—but without any pore-clogging ingredients. The mucin and sodium PCA replenish moisture, while the antioxidants glutathione and vitamins E and C ward off free radicals. This one suits all skin types and would be especially helpful in cold, dry climates.
Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence
Ingredients: Water, Rosa Damascena Flower Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Water, Leuconostoc Ferment Filtrate (Radish Root Extract), Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Distillate, Caprylyl/Capryl Wheat Bran/Straw Glycosides, Sodium Hyaluronate, Beta Vulgaris (Beet) Root, Centalla Asiatica Extract (Gotu Kola), Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract, Hydrolyzed Corn Starch, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder, Fusel Wheat Bran/Straw Glycosides, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate (Derived From Coconut), Glyceryl Caprylate (Derived From Fatty Acids Of Corn, Coconut And Glycerin), Sodium Phytate (Derived From Rice Bran), Soybean Peroxidase (Derived From Soy), Superoxide Dismutase (Derived From Horseradish Root), Polyglyceryl-5 Oleate (Naturally Derived), Essential Oil Blend Clinical Grade Essential Oils; Citral, Geraniol, Benzyl Benzoate, Citronellol, Limonene, Linanlool.
Yes, it's expensive. But Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence is packed with natural humectants and organically derived botanical extracts, including bioidentical hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, gotu kola and floral hydrosols. (Plus, you're paying for the packaging, which couldn't be more luxe.) It does have some potentially irritating essential oils at the end of the ingredients list, so be cautious with sensitive skin.
Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Coconut Water Hydrating Face Mist
Ingredients: Water, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Water, Hamamelis virginiana (Witch Hazel) Distillate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Water (Aloe Water), Hibiscus Flower Extract, Bulgarian Rose Oil, Grapefruit Oil, Lactobacillus Ferment.
I love the short, simple, all-natural ingredients list of Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Coconut Water Hydrating Face Mist. Expect light hydration from the high coconut water content, plus hibiscus water and soothing aloe vera. Although the rose and grapefruit oils are minimal, they could be a problem if you have reactive skin.
Conclusion
If you're going to use a face mist (and I think you should!), your skin deserves one that is both safe and beneficial. Sure, all face mists feel refreshing, but not all of them will help your complexion. In fact, if you're misting with alcohol, perfume and vegetable oils, you might even be setting your skin further back!
That's where these products come in. Of all the mists out there, they've got the most high-quality ingredients and will truly nurture your skin. Hopefully, you'll find at least one here to love!
