Q: What Makeup Should I Wear to a Wedding?

Did you know? Kim Kardashian is getting married on Saturday. I am sure you've all been counting down the days. I was just visiting her makeup artist's blog (his name is Mario Dedivanovic) and he is apparently soliciting ideas. I quote: “If you could choose a look for Kim on her wedding day, what would it be? Radiant/natural? or sexy/glam? Leave your comments! Xo“

So far, nobody has commented, which means Mario better have a plan of his own. And I really, REALLY hope it's not “sexy/glam.” Maybe it's just me, but I don't want to see sexytime makeup (or wardrobe) at a wedding. Dark, smoky eyes, obvious fake lashes, trendy colours and my top pet peeve, in-your-face cleavage, just do not belong. I know it's not very Kardashian-esque, but this is a time to look PRETTY—whether you are the bride or a guest. So yes, Mario, radiant and natural is defo the way to go.

And on that note, I received a couple of Twestions (Twitter questions) recently from peeps needing help with what makeup to wear to a wedding. Well, obviously I have a point of view. So once you've followed my tips for wedding prep, and figured out what to do with your hair, check out these 13 wedding makeup looks to get inspired!

IF YOU WANT TO FOCUS ON YOUR LIPS…

I've gotta say, I'm still loving the fuchsia lip for an easy, one-step way to make yourself look all fancy. In fact, I've got another wedding this week and it's what I'm planning on wearing this time! Here it is on the Portman:

So simple, right? It's a softer sort of fuchsia, and she's barely wearing any eye makeup, so the look is really natural and fresh—I think this would work on a bride OR a guest.

However, I think I love Lucy Liu's version even more:

Probably because it reminds me of that other Portman look, the one where I originally fell for this lipstick shade, as well as the perfect, perfect side bun. (Not that we're talking about hair today, but I'm a huge fan.) Lucy's lippie is brighter, and she's also got some nice lash definition going on, so it's a little bolder and more fashion-forward. And don't think you couldn't do this as a bride—I totally would.

But that's not to say you can't wear other shades of lipstick. I think this is a particularly nice example of an orangey-red on Taylor Swift:

I don't love this shade—or any highly-saturated red or orange, really—for brides, but it's certainly a fun colour to wear as a guest. I think it works nicely here with the smudgy eye makeup… and her skin is just to die for. Wow.

The problem with doing a big lip, however, is that weddings are a multi-hour affair… and you're going to be eating, drinking, talking and, um, possibly kissing. So just know that re-application is a must. (To keep the colour, consider painting your lips with a lip stain or lip pencil underneath the lipstick.) Or if that's a problem for you, go for a softer, more forgiving shade, like what Mila Kunis is wearing here:

This coral is really a go-with-anything colour, and flatters every skin tone. Michelle Williams is doing a slightly less glossy interpretation here:

IF YOU'D RATHER PLAY UP YOUR EYES:

Some of us just do better with lotsa eye makeup. (I'm always told this by makeup artists, but it's often hard to resist the allure of a happy new lip colour.) Anyway, I think up-and-comer Jennifer Lawrence does a great job here of emphasizing her baby blues without looking overdone or too “evening.”

The secret? I think it's that she's kept the colours smudgy and warm—as in BROWN—which is so much softer than steely gray or charcoal, especially when worn way up above the crease. Keep the darkest colours just along the lash line, and pair with a shiny nude lip. Even a bride could get away with this one.

The next look isn't very bridal, but guests can bust out the winged-out liquid liner that we all gushed over the other day on Nina Dobrev:

This works because the liner, while dramatic, is paired with an otherwise nude face and the youthful ponytail. It could, however, be a bit of a pain to keep smudge-free because of the detail work along the waterlines and at the inner corners. You'll want to use waterproof prodz and set with powder.

Speaking of waterlines, another eye-emphasizing trick I love (for wedding guests only, please) is this vintage Emma Stone navy liner:

Definitely one of my top makeup looks of all time—yes, really—and I think a bit easier than Nina's makeup because this can go a bit smudgy and still look good. You want to line the waterlines all the way around with a charcoal colour, and then draw a second line on the lower lid only in navy.

If you'd rather not deal with all of this liner business, here's a softer, more ethereal Christina Hendricks look:

This is all about the shadow: both the grey to define the outer edges and the shimmery highlight at the inner corners. Peach blush and pink gloss complete the look.

FOR AN ALL-OVER NATURAL LOOK:

So let's say you don't want to choose between eyes and lips—you just want to look natural and radiant without emphasizing any one feature. How about copying Amy Adams? She's too pretty for words here:

There's a great balance going on with this makeup. Warm shadow and a dark liner just on the upper lid, with rosy blush and gloss on the bottom half. I think the shimmer on the lids really elevates it from an everyday look.

Another interpretation of the natural look comes courtesy Kate Hudson:

Ignore the headpiece and instead focus on her face. In typical K-Hud fashion, everything is soft and peachy… save for the extremely fine liner all the way around her eyes. It's a great technique for dressing up an otherwise understated face.

And then we have Rosario:

I'm pretty sure you need to be genetically blessed to look this good on a red carpet with this little makeup—but for those who dare, it's just a lick of mascara, some soft gray shadow and the barest hint of blush and lip gloss. With her features, I think stronger makeup might've looked overdone.

And finally, since she has appeared in all of my wedding posts this year, I've got to once again praise Blake Lively:

This is all about gorgeous, slightly tanned skin (faux I hope!). She doesn't need much else with it; just pretty pink lips and darkened lashes.

No matter what you decide to do with your makeup, remember:

1. Make sure your skin looks amaze. Don't go getting a facial where they do extractions, as that could cause you to break out. Check out this post for some tips on at-home masks that I love.

2. Use a semi-matte (not too radiant or dewy) foundation if you don't want to look like a greaseball in photos. Prime underneath and apply (and re-apply) a translucent finishing powder *sparingly* to cut shine.

3. Waterproof mascara. Duh.
