Can You Wear Red Lips With a Red Dress? Megan Fox Did!

Just when we were talking about red dresses—and how Lily Collins played things exactly right by pairing hers with graphic black liquid liner—along comes Megan Fox wearing one, too. Except this time, she did the exact opposite thing. The predictable thing.

She wore her red dress with matching red lipstick:

I freakin' LOVE that Versace dress. It actually looks like it would be comfortable, somehow. And the colour is ridiculously good with Megan's dark hair and fair complexion. (She has classic “winter” colouring, don't you think? Not that we're in the 1980s.)

And you know what? Although I've been semi-against the idea of matchy-matchiness lately, I feel like this makeup really works. (Aside from the slightly lighter face versus neck… probably the flash.)

Here's why I approve, and what to remember the next time YOU wear red.

What Shade of Red Is It?

First, consider the colour of the outfit you're wearing. Megan's dress is a jewel-toned cool red, so matching it with a dark cherry lipstick doesn't overpower the look, like doing it in Lily's vivid tomato red would. It's MUCH easier to pull off matchy-matchy in classic, subdued hues. The brighter and more unusual the colour, the more people are going to notice your matchiness (and not necessarily in a good way).

Is Your Look Modern or Classic?

Also factor in the lines of outfit. The more modern and clean the lines of the clothes, the less matchy (and more graphic) the makeup should be. We've all seen celebs on the red carpet wearing makeup that seems too dated for their style of dress, right?

Since Megan's gown is quite timeless, feminine and understated—”easy glamour,” I'd call it—a matchy lip doesn't look out of place. A nude lip would almost make it TOO casual. Compare it to Lily's dress, which is so minimalistic that it practically begs for dramatic liner.

Do You Have a Matchy Personality?

The last thing to consider—an obvious one, that's important to every makeup look—is personality. As much as we can admire arty, high-fashion makeup looks, not all of us have the necessary edginess to pull 'em off. (I mean, look at me here—I sure don't.)

When I look at Megan, I see someone who is straight-up glamorous. I don't think we've ever caught her in graphic liner or non-traditional eye makeup (or even lip) colours. So in her case, a matchy look probably makes sense. (But if we saw this on, say, Elle Fanning, it wouldn't feel right at all.)

Want to copy Megan's makeup here? I've got the exact step-by-step from her makeup artist, Monika Blunder:

How To Get Megan Fox's Glam Red Lips and Shimmery Eyes

1. Use a foundation brush to apply Clé de Peau Beauté Silky Cream Foundation in O30. Cover darkness under the eyes using NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard.

2. Dust the cheeks with Lorac Baked Matte Satin Blush in Velvet Rope. Sweep Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light over the high points of the face to illuminate.

3. Fill in the brows with Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade in Dark Brown.

4. Apply Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Color in Sunshower on the upper lids and along the lower lash lines. Use Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Precision Longwear Eyeliner in Black to draw a thin line along the upper lash lines, creating a slight wing at the outer corners.

5. Coat the lashes with Sisley So Intense Mascara, and then apply Ardell Individual Lashes in short and medium.

6. Finish the look with Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Creme Lipstick in Icon.

One last look at this matchy-matchy triumph:

I don't know about you, but I'm loving this take on monochromatic makeup—and that red lipstick NEEDS to be in my life. Let me know what you think!
