SAG Awards 2023: The Best Celebrity Beauty Looks on the Red Carpet
Another week, another red carpet, another round of gorgeous hair and makeup looks!
This time, they're from the Screen Actors Guild Awards, better known as the SAGs, held on Sunday night in Los Angeles. Here are ALL the juicy beauty details:
Emma Stone
What I like: Now THIS is the kind of makeup I adore on Emma! (Unlike, say, the pale pinks that kinda washed her out at the Globes.) The smudgy greenish-gold adds just enough drama to her eyes, while the warm pink lips and cheeks bring life to her complexion. She's doing the retro wave thing in her side-parted hair, but because it's a mid-length, it doesn't look dated. What I'd change: Nothing.
Emma is wearing:Concealer // Blush in Dolce Vita // Eyeshadow in Snake Eyes
Kerry Washington
What I like: Kerry's bold black eyeshadow. Remember when Beyoncé did a shape like this at last year's Met Gala? I think Kerry wears it better! It's not so heavy at the inner corners, and the highlight gives it dimension. Her lips look fab in the opaque peach gloss, and the long, straight hair complements the fierceness of the eyes. Let's also take a moment to appreciate the perfection of her skin. What I'd change: I don't like the way her brows are filled in. The brown powder is obvious and distracting.
Kerry is wearing:Moisturizer // Foundation in Cocoa // Concealer in Deep // Blush in Vibrant // Eyeshadow in Smoky Steel // Eyeliner in Cosmic Black // Mascara in Carbon Black // False lashes in #811 // Brow pomade in Dark Brown // Lip balm // Lip crayon in Berry Brown
Sophia Bush
What I like: Sophia's neon pink and purple eyeshadow. I know not everyone was into this, but I think it's super-fun! I'm glad the brights were left to do most of the talking, with no competing lashes, liner or lipstick—just fresh skin and nude blush and lip gloss. The playful mood is carried through to her hair, with face-framing modern waves. What I'd change: Her roots are maybe a bit limp, but okay.
Sophia is wearing:Foundation // Blush in Vibration // Lipstick in La Sensuelle (as eyeshadow) // Eyeshadow in Tissé Cambon // Eyeliner in Cassis // Mascara // Lip crayon in No. 1 Nude // Lip crayon in No. 3 Rose Clair
Michelle Williams
What I like: The skinny black liner all the way around Michelle's eyes. I especially enjoy how it's defining her inner corners. A faint reddish stain and glossy finish enhance her lips, but everything else is pale and soft. While she wore her platinum crop all sleek at the Golden Globes, this time it's deliberately messy. What I'd change: Her lower lip liner isn't quite blended.
Yara Shahidi
What I like: Yara's pretty, pink-stained lips. They have such a unique shape, and the texture is just perfect. So is everything else about this look, from the sleek, side-parted updo to the matte taupe shadow and subtle contouring. She has amazing skin and brows—but keep in mind, she's only 16! What I'd change: Nothing. (Yara has so much lid space, she pulls off the false lashes.)
Yara is wearing:Lipstick in Doused Rose // Lip crayon in Bordeaux Vines
Busy Philipps
What I like: Busy's dark brows and vibrant, cool-toned makeup palette. Which is surprising, because I'm normally averse to so many cold colours on the face all at once! In this case, the silver shadow and raspberry lipstick pop beautifully against Busy's warm skin and hair. It helps that she has great skin and nice, thick brows. The casual ponytail is great because it takes down the dressiness of the makeup. What I'd change: The blush could be softer and more peachy.
Janelle Monáe
What I like: Janelle's signature twin buns, this time accessorized with tiny flowers. It's really incredible how she can wear beauty looks (and outfits) that would easily be overkill on anybody else. Her makeup has a magenta theme on lips and lids, with neutral tones for sculpting and black liner for definition. What I'd change: Just a little concerned with the borderline #kelleybakerbrows.
Janelle is wearing:Concealer in Deep // Eyeshadow in Roses // Eyeliner in Espresso // Mascara in Intense Black // Brow mascara in Soft Brown // Brow powder in Soft Brown // Lip colour in Vivid Violet
Brie Larson
What I like: Brie's subtle brown eye makeup and light burnt orange lipstick. With her nice skin and brows, it's a very understated, tone-on-tone look to complement her white dress. The textured waves through her updo add a romantic touch. What I'd change: Rather than muted warm tones, I have to say that I much prefer Brie in clear brights. Like this look.
Brie is wearing: Concealer // Eyeshadow in Galapagos // Lipstick in Kiss Me Stupid
Sophie Turner
What I like: The contrast of matte red lips against Sophie's ultra-pale skin and hair. I love how defined her lashes are, with no liner, just sheer light gold shadow all over the lids. Although her brows aren't super-thick, the darker hue and roughed-up texture gives them impact. I like that she wore her hair long, loose and wavy. What I'd change: Her skin finish is on the heavier side, and her ends could use a crisp trim.
Rashida Jones
What I like: Rashida's relaxed, mid-length waves and brow-skimming bangs. It's dressy, but she still looks like herself. The warm berry lipstick echoes the flowers on her dress, and I love the way she did her black liner. It's thicker along the top lashes, with no wing, and a skinnier line around the rest of the eye. What I'd change: Nothing.
Emily Blunt
What I like: Besides the dangly purple earrings, which are amazing, my favourite part of this look is Emily's soft pink lipstick. Plus the muted tones in general, since she has often come across a bit overdone on the red carpet in the past. The copper shade over her lids is interesting, and I love the simple, blown-out lob. What I'd change: This blonde really washes her out. Also not helping matters is all the product underneath her eyes. It's making the skin there look too dry and dark.
Emily is wearing: Eye primer in Linen // Blush in Rose Bloom (as eyeshadow) // Eyeshadow in Fresco // Eyeshadow in Metallik Rust // Eyeshadow in Terracotta // Lipstick in Rose
Natalie Portman
What I like: Natalie's purple smoky eyes. I love brunettes in purple! She kept things fresh by opting for natural lashes, a sheer berry-tinted lip balm, and subtly stained cheeks. She has excellent brows, and I like the controlled waves through her updo. What I'd change: Nothing.
Nathalie Emmanuel
What I like: Nathalie's always-perfect curly hair with pretty, natural makeup. It's all in the details, such as the shimmery gold shadow from lash line to crease, and the gold-flecked gloss on her lips. A slightly darker, warmer hue than her skin tone contours her lids and cheeks. What I'd change: She has amazing brows, but I can't help but wonder what they'd look like without trimming.
Amy Adams
What I like: Amy's effortless loose bun and long, side-swept bang. I also love the change of pace with this edgier, smoky metallic eye—which totally picks up the silver and blue hues of her jewellery. Her makeup artist says this is one of his favourite and most wearable lip glosses. What I'd change: Her brows look more red and drawn-on than usual, but it might be this particular angle/lighting.
Amy is wearing: Eyeshadow in Metallik Pewter // Lip gloss in Bare Beige
Salma Hayek
What I like: Salma's lipstick and eyeshadow are matchy-matchy in pink, but it's subtle. This woman clearly does not age, because it doesn't even look like she's wearing foundation! She has great full brows, and I like the au naturel lashes with smudgy charcoal liner. The side-swept waves are actually braided at the back, and don't look stiff like we usually see on the red carpet. What I'd change: I'd maybe tame a bit of that frizz. I don't mind what she's doing with the nude lip liner.
Kate Hudson
What I like: Kate's fluffy lashes and natural brows with the rich, deep red lipstick. I always like the freshness of a bold mouth with bare-ish eyes. What I'd change: She's been wearing her hair in this off-the-face style so often lately, but it's not my favourite. I prefer it longer and looser—more Boho. The contouring is also a tad obvious.
Kate is wearing: Foundation in 2.0 // Concealer in D100 // Powder in P100 (T-zone) and P300 (cheeks, temples and hairline) // Foundation in 5.0 and 6.0 (as contour) // Eyeshadow in 943 // Mascara // Lipstick in Cocoa // Lipstick in Glastonberry
Naomie Harris
What I like: Naomie's easy, pretty makeup and hair. To me, this is way more “her” than the glammed look she sported at the Globes. No false lashes this time; instead, she emphasized her eyes with smudgy, soft charcoal grey. I adore her in pinks, and notice how the lip colour is a tad more cool-toned than the seamless blush. Long, loose hair was the perfect choice for the very chic, very French details of her outfit. What I'd change: Nothing.
Michelle Dockery
What I like: Michelle's orange lipstick. It's matchy to her bright dress, and I'm so glad she went for this shade and not the obvious fuchsia. It's echoed in her eyeshadow and contour—and the latter is impressively restrained, given how pale her skin is. Dark brows and brown liner give her eyes amazing definition. I like that her hair is down, but off her face. What I'd change: She has dry skin, so it would've been nice to see creamier textures and some shine on the cheeks.
Michelle is wearing: Concealer // Bronzer in Laguna // Lipstick in Heat Wave
Amanda Peet
What I like: I never get tired of red lipstick on Amanda. This one is particularly great, a bold orangey-red with a velvety matte finish and not too precise edges. As usual, she wore it with just mascara and strong brows. I like the loose, flipped-to-one-side hairstyle, too. What I'd change: Her skin looks dry here (which hasn't been the case in the past, with less makeup on).
Tracee Ellis Ross
What I like: Tracee's rose gold eyeshadow. So fun, given she has all that lid space to play with—and she doesn't need any liner, just mascara. I also like the long fishtail braid (even if they're not “on trend” right now), and those hot pink tassel earrings complete the entire look. What I'd change: The contouring is a little strong for my taste, and I'd blot down some of that thick, opaque beige lip colour.
Kirsten Dunst
What I like: Kirsten's sparkly shadow and long, soft lashes. (Falsies are kind of lazy when it's possible to get lashes to look this gorgeously defined!) The brow-filling is quite clever on the one side, and I like her a lot with mid-length hair. What I'd change: I feel like I've seen this makeup many times before, so I would've changed up the lip colour instead of her usual red.
Kirsten is wearing:Mascara // Lip crayon in No. 5 Rouge
Chrissy Teigen
What I like: Chrissy's creamy orange-red lipstick and subtle brown eyeshadow. There's not much contouring, and her lashes are soft, so it certainly appears that she has entered a new phase of lighter makeup. The brushed waves in her long hair are so pretty! What I'd change: Nothing.
Chrissy is wearing:Face oil // Moisturizer // Eye gel // Eye serum // Foundation // Concealer in Light, Medium and Medium Deep // Colour corrector in Peach, Pistachio and Violet // Blush in Love Lust // Lip balm // Lipstick in Devil Inside (as lip liner) // Lipstick in Lady Danger
Taraji P. Henson
What I like: Taraji's side-parted voluminous bob. Not quite as much wow factor as her Globes style last year, but still great. Her lip colour picks up the same sheer berry tone as the dress, and once again we've got an eyeshadow in the same colour family. What I'd change: Nothing. (The undercut isn't my thing, but whatever floats her boat.)
Taraji is wearing:Eye balm // Wrinkle treatment // Serum // Primer // Foundation in Tan // Powder in Banana // Powder in Chestnut // Blush // Highlighter // Setting spray // Eyeshadow // Mascara in Black // Brow pencil // Lip liner in Plum // Lip gloss
Diane Guerrero
What I like: Diane's gorgeous skin and striking features. She has amazing full lips and brows! I like the subtle highlights at the inner corners of her eyes, the matte red lips and the sleek hairstyle. What I'd change: It's such a shame she added the big false lashes and the brow powder in an angular shape—they make this too heavy, and she doesn't need them.
Maisie Williams
What I like: Maisie's fresh skin, thick brows and natural lashes. The blackened lipstick might've been okay IF the hair were different… What I'd change: These retro waves are too “done” and make her look so cutesy. It's wearing her and not vice-versa. My favourite hair for Maisie was this straight lob in a deep side part.
Maisie is wearing: Eyeshadow in Canvas, Pink Nude and Clay // Lipstick in Black Cherry // Lip liner in Dominatrix
Bryce Dallas Howard
What I like: Bryce's coral lipstick. It's such a lovely understated shade that suits her colouring. She's doing a warm hue on her eyelids, similar to Emily Blunt's. I like the side-swept bangs, and the back of her hair was VERY cool. What I'd change: Her under-eye area looks super-dry, and I think she needs more lash definition.
Bryce is wearing: Lip crayon in No. 4 Rouge Corail
Sarah Paulson
What I like: Sarah's blonde is gone! Finally! This warm, medium brown is so much better with her skin tone and makes her hair look far healthier. I like the side-swept bob as well. She went lighter on her brows this time (compared to the Globes), with the classic pairing of red lips and black lashes. Her creamy red lipstick looks beautiful. What I'd change: I'm not crazy about contour on an already long face shape.
Taryn Manning
What I like: Believe it or not, I actually DO like Taryn's pink hair colour. As a blonde, she looked a little wan. I also appreciate the light touch on the eye and brow makeup. What I'd change: Aside from the fact that the application is messy, I'm not feeling the dark lipstick—it's too much with the pink hair. A soft, pale lip would've played up the pastel palette better.
Viola Davis
What I like: Viola's textured, wavy bob. This is her Life Cut, as far as I'm concerned. I also like her glossy neutral lips and even the copper eyeshadow. What I'd change: I'm not opposed to false lashes on her, but this pair is so over the top! She would be a good candidate for microblading.
Sofia Vergara
What I like: Sofia's red lipstick isn't anything extraordinary, but it IS an improvement over the heavy textures she has favoured in the past. Her hair's fine, too. What I'd change: Holy cheek fillers! They probably look okay when she's not smiling, but the way they're jutting out here, so low on the face, is strange. As usual, I'd love to see her with tidier brows and softer lashes… but I've been saying that for like five years now.
Sofia is wearing:Eyeshadow in Nudes // Eyeliner in Espresso // Mascara in Extreme Black (top lashes) // Mascara in Black Brown (bottom lashes) // Brow mascara in Soft Brown // Lip colour in Richest Red // Lip liner in Passion
Ariel Winter
What I like: Ariel has such incredible skin (which is why I don't get her need for all this artifice!). I do like this orange lipstick and her new, shorter hair length. What I'd change: This might be the craziest set of false lashes I've EVER seen, and that's saying a lot! The rest of the makeup is mask-like, and I think the black hair is too harsh on her, almost like a wig.
Taylor Schilling
What I like: Assessed individually, I like Taylor's berry lipstick and copper eyeshadow. And she has fantastic brows. What I'd change: It's just that altogether, I don't enjoy these dark colours AT ALL on Taylor—especially with her streaky-looking hair (although part of the problem might be the lighting). It's actually hard to believe this is the same person. I think she should stick with lighter, brighter shades for a fresher look.
Taryn is wearing: Moisturizer // Foundation // Bronzer // Blush in Something Special // Blush in Helena // Eyeshadow in Trafalgar // Mascara in Burgundy // Lip balm // Lipstick in 48 Satin Blackcurrant
