Mark Leaver is a photographer who tried to understand people with face tattoos and take their pictures highlighting their personality and beauty. He found that many of his subjects didn’t have a particular reason for getting a face tattoo. They were all heavily tattooed before they decided to get a facial tattoo. According to him, Facial tattoos now represent individuality, creativity, aesthetics, transformation and spirituality. Even so, most people have a very bad opinion about this type of tattoo, associating it with negative aspects, such as suicide, criminality and depression.
114 Face Tattoos That Are Holy Sh*t Amazing:
Rebellion or not, face tattoos represent a bigger commitment than other tattoos that are placed on different parts of the body. They cannot be hidden, so regardless of how subtle they are, they might expose anyone to unwanted attention and reaction. For example, in the UK and even the US the presence of people with face tattoos is not tolerated in certain restaurants and pubs. This type of rejection makes body modification and facial art less popular for no good reason. Celebrities like Kat Von D promote face tattoos and tattoos in general, so there’s only a matter of time until they will be socially acceptable.
Any grounded person with a sharp mind knows how to make a living and they don’t rely on a 9 to 5 type of job, so this argument cannot be used against facial inking. Besides cosmetic tattoos, there are plenty tasteful, meaningful and artistic face tattoos that could change the way you look at them. Indeed, there are a few very uninspired such tattoos on people who didn’t think it through, but they aren’t spokespersons for everyone who enhances his or her look with face ink. Body mods are a way of expression and an alternative style of life.
45. Cute Kanji symbol Face Tattoos
Cute Kanji symbol on a very cute guy! How can this not be a successful combination? I have no idea what that character means, but I’m sure it is about something positive. His other tattoos are colorful and he looks like a gentle person. The size of his face tattoo is proportional with his face. It doesn’t look too big or too small. It must be something he believes in or something that represents him since he chose to ink it below his eye. Regardless of his reasons, I think it really fits!
44. Side face symbol and heart
If you think about it, there’s almost no other place on our bodies that could be more fitted for really small tattoos than our faces. Theoretically we could ink anything, anywhere, but the risk of that particular pattern to be disproportional is high. Besides the mysterious symbol and the small heart, this beautiful lady has a piercing in her cheek, which complements her face tattoos. She is definitely a fan of multiple types of body modifications, fact which helps her express her personality and taste better than most things.

43. Ornamental side face piece
Side face tattoos are more subtle than others. In this particular case, she could simply cover it with her hair if she didn’t want people to see it. Just as we wear earrings and we consider them accessories, this girl chose an ornamental tattoo situated next to her ear. I think it accentuates her femininity and it is a nice addition to her stretched lobe. Why would it be more acceptable to get a tattoo behind your ear than get one next to it? People’s preconceived opinions should not affect you in any way. Do you like this tattoo? If you do, nothing should stop you from getting a similar one.
42. White stripes on a thinker’s face
Judging by this person’s beard length and his hat, he is a modern man. However, I doubt that the tattoo on his face is modern. In a way, it could be considered a minimalist tattoo, but it could also mean something deeply spiritual. Part of his tattoo is on his eyelid. I find that a bit extreme due to pain. That sort of reminds me of eye tattoos, which are much more dangerous and painful than three stripes on an eyelid. The stripes’ lengths differ, so that might be meaningful as well. Overall, it’s not the type of face tattoos that stand out.
41. 21 is a mesmerizing number
This guy’s name is Dawid Auguscik and he is a model, doh! The number 21 tattooed on his face has multiple meanings, namely the maturity and the responsibility of an individual, the notion of chief, the harmony of the creation, the union of Trinity and so on. While we don’t really know why Dawid decided to have it inked, I totally approve! He is a gorgeous man who is not afraid to express himself through his physical beauty and tattoos. He is obviously an adept of the alternative style.
40. Faith on display
If you look close enough, you’ll notice that this guy has a tattoo on the side of his head and on his neck. The tattoo on his face could be related to the other two that aren’t entirely visible, or not. What’s important is that he felt the need to ink the word faith on his skin. This isn’t necessarily a proof that he is a religious person, but more of a spiritual one. Sometimes having faith in yourself only is enough to get you through the day and life. The tattoo itself is tasteful and perfectly sized for his face.
39. Side face snowflake
Blue, perfectly shaped and cute, this snowflake tattoo is awesome! Face tattoos placed on the side are simple to cover and I think they also help with contouring. Its size is a bit too large for my taste, but other than that I really appreciate it! Winter and the appearance of a snowflake and among my favorites. Are you a winter lover or a summer fan? Imagine replacing this snowflake with something that makes you think of summer. What would that be?
38. The beauty and her sword
Sword symbolism is different from culture to culture, but it looks awesome on any person! According to alchemy, the sword is a symbol of purification and, according to Buddhism it is a symbol of cutting ignorance away. Christians think of it as a symbol of truth, purity and equanimity. As you can see, all its significances are positive and highly spiritual. This girl is not just beautiful, but also insightful and with a great taste in tattoos and other body modifications!
37. Diamonds on thy cheek
A diamond surrounded by numbers and a word written above the eyebrow are this fellow’s face tattoos. He has his scalp tattooed, as well as his neck, so it was only a matter of time until he moved on to his face. Such tattoos are really personal and assuming why a person got them could be in vain. While easy to notice, they aren’t striking. The volume of his beard is much more noticeable than his tattoos are!
36. Freckles and a face line
This blue-eyed girl has a black line tattooed across her face and it doesn’t look bad at all! It is indeed a very obvious face tattoo that doesn’t look trashy in any way. Such markings were usually used by warriors. Their meaning depends from tribe to tribe and its provenience. Knowing what face tattoos mean is not always a must. I can admire them without trying to understand them. Simplicity is sometimes more beautiful than complexity. Let’s take things as they are from time to time!
35. Side mandala and eyebrow dots
Not a novice when it comes to face tattoos, this girl looks pretty, tattoos included! Her eyebrows are also tattooed and the difference between cosmetic tattoos and normal face tattoos is quite obvious. Many people don’t differentiate these two types of tattooing techniques, fact which leads to unsuccessful attempts. She is a fan of mandala patterns as you can see on her neck and on her chest. She probably thinks they enhance her appearance and spiritually. If so, she is right! I especially like the dots below her eyebrow although their meaning is not clear to me.
34. Kat Von D’s face stars
Kat Von D is a celebrity who has made her face star tattoos famous. They are among her signature tattoos and they contribute to her charm. I can’t imagine her without all those cute little stars or without her other tattoos. Her face doesn’t look glamorous just thanks to her makeup, but also thanks to the stars. They might not sparkle, but their effect is similar with sparkling. 16 or more, the stars are not all the same size.
33. Pretty ornamental string
This tattoo spreads all over this alternative girl’s side face, neck and shoulder. It is a piece that starts with an ornamental string and finishes with blue paint leaks tattooed in the watercolor technique. The ornament contains multiple infinity symbols, but they could mean something completely different to her. A tasteful face tattoo design, this is among the few face tattoos that are continued on neck and shoulder.
32. White ink mandalas
White ink embellishments are harder to notice, so they are recommended for people who don’t want to stand out easily. This pretty woman chose to get half mandalas inked on her forehead and temple, as well as three horizontal lines on her nose and other symbols on her chin. She is a fan of body modifications considering her piercings and stretched lobes. Mandalas are quite popular as tattoos and many individuals relate to their idea of universe and microcosms.
31. Manly ornamental face design
Ornamental tattoo designs aren’t only for women. Men have a wide variety of patterns at their disposal that don’t mean much, but they look cool. The same design is suited for women too, but the lines are usually thinner when drawn on a woman. The location of this face tattoo is ideal because it can be covered with hair and beard. This person can decide to conceal his ink when and if needed. Or Kantor is the name of the tattoo artist who inked this one.
30. Itsy bitsy spider
The spider is a recent addition on this guy’s face. He also has a simply-drawn snowflake and another tattoo that is covered by his beard. What’s interesting is that the spider comes from the mouth of a lion. It looks like it is trying to escape by holding on to a thread that’s hanging from one of his fangs. A basic, 2D design, the spider is a symbol of mystery, power and growth.
29. Tiny symbol on a cheekbone
This woman is definitely passionate about alchemy. She chose a symbol that means oil and that is only used by an alchemist. Her tattoo is tiny, but this fact makes it even more feminine and appealing. She seems like a humble person who is grateful for all forms of art and isn’t afraid to express her passions. Would you like to send such a message to any person who looks at your face tattoos?
28. The Holy Trinity and the reversed cross
Is it just me or this guy looks like Rasputin? I think the whole purpose of this picture was to make him look frightening and mysterious at the same time. His tattoos are nicely defined thanks to the black and white contrast. The three dots under his left eye represent the Holy Trinity and it is a tattoo usually found on inmates. The reversed cross is not usually found on inmates, but rather the normal cross. In his case, it could refer to his religious beliefs. The x above his eyebrow might also mean something profound, but it’s not a generally known symbol.
27. Crowned in ’86
Tattooed and a model, this person chose to get a tattoo on his temple. His tattoo consists of the drawing of a crown and the number 86. He could’ve been crowned in 1986 for a special achievement or even as king at his prom. Regardless of his successes in life, he has successfully chosen a great-looking face tattoo.
26. The stake and the rope
I can’t find any reasonable explanation for someone who got a stake tattooed on his face, but I must admit it looks awesome nevertheless. Besides the stake, there’s also a rope shaped like it’s ready to be used on someone sentenced to death. He has multiple tattoos on his scalp and next to his ear. He looks like a gloomy character from a gothic novel.
25. Brag about vanity
Last time I checked, vanity wasn’t a quality, but it can become one in the shape of a tattoo. The font and the location of this tattoo make excellent choices. This beauty is tattooed all over her body, so her face tattoo blends nicely with the other ones. As mentioned before, few people tattoo their faces if their bodies aren’t already full of tattoos.
24. Half ear, half mandala
This person looks peaceful and happy! She could be so because she allows herself to enjoy different types of body modifications and she embraces positive things. She has two halves of beautiful mandalas tattooed next to her ears. The mandalas contain tiny hearts and they are inked in red. Mandalas don’t all look the same, so they can be personalized. This is part of the reason why they are so popular right now.
23. Forehead mandala and a maze
Inked using a different technique than the one from the previous mandala face tattoos, this half mandala occupies a large part of this woman’s forehead. She is an ink enthusiast who shaved the side of her head and got tattooed something that looks like a maze. After her hair grows back, part of her side tattoo will still be visible. I’m guessing she has a bigger plan for her entire body because her tattoos don’t seem to be placed randomly.
22. Anchor, writing and a rose
This amazing redhead is a fan of roses! Like she didn’t have enough roses on her arms and chest, she got another tattoo of a rose on her forehead. The rose is actually following her hairline, so it doesn’t stand out as much as the anchor and the writing do. I can’t tell what word she decided to ink on her face, but I’m sure it is something meaningful. The ornamental font looks especially pretty and it suits her.
21. Attractive and flattering face text
Flirty and a model, this brunette has multiple face tattoos. She has one above her eyebrow and one below her other eye. In addition, there are a small heart and a small triangle inked below one of her eyes. She didn’t spare her jawline either. That’s where she chose to have another illegible text tattoo. Overall, I think she’s on the edge of getting too much ink on her face.
20. Sanskrit tattoo on a forehead
Sanskrit is how Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism are expressed in writing. This guy is definitely an admirer of the Indian culture since he is wearing themed earrings. His tattoo is not common at all. His choice in size and color are original. The meaning of the text is unknown, but it is surely connected with an Indian ideology. His look might seem too much for some, but I think it’s fascinating.
19. Full face Asian tattoo
This Asian woman looks happy with her stretched lobes and her full face tattoos. She is an example that tattoos look great after we grow old and that they cannot stop us from feeling wonderful. Her smile is sincere and her tattoos don’t seem out of place. Even if they spread all over her face, they appear to be part of it. Nothing stands out in particular except her smile.
18. Let it snow with stars
Now this is a girl who really likes stars! She likes the small, simple ones, as well as the blue, swirly ones. They spread from her temple to her jawline and they continue on her neck. This location is strategic because it highlights her other features. She inserted a few other elements like a small heart and a lightning sign. I don’t think the stars are connected to any religion even if they are five-pointed stars.
17. Chin up for ink
Chin tattoos are growing in popularity! Whether they are colored, like this one, or not, they look rather unusual, but really cool at the same time. As a continuation of a neck tattoo, this chin tattoo seems to be made out of small ice crystals arranged in an orderly manner. The lines are very precise. I wonder if someone with a double chin could pull off this type of tattoo. What do you think?
16. Wide streak and black dots
This guy looks like a movie character. He is mysterious, wrapped in black clothes and sporting a long beard. He has two big dots tattooed on his temple and a wide streak across his head. These are some of the most interesting face tattoos I’ve seen because they are perfectly placed, nicely inked and confer an image that is out of the ordinary. Tattoos like these can arouse interest in the person hiding behind them. Maybe this is not what he wanted, but I’m definitely interested!
15. Washed away geometric design
Only a person committed to face tattoos could pick a design like this one! Geometric tattoos are nice, but when you add the faded away effect, they might look a bit too much especially for areas like faces. Precise designs aren’t really a thing, so it really depends on every individual’s taste. His blue hair matches with the green ink used on his face, don’t you think?
14. Eyebrows replacement and facial transformation
One’s shape and size of the eyebrows changes his or her whole appearance. This man replaced his natural eyebrows with tattoos that only follow the initial line, but they look completely different. They look like a primitive language. Part of his lip and chin are also tattooed. That thick line extends on his neck and it becomes part of a more complex design. As for the trident on his forehead, you should know that it is originated from the Greek mythology and it used to be associated with Poseidon. The trident is also called the Indian Trisula.
13. Badass blonde fighter
As you’ve probably noticed by now, face tattoos are usually placed near the eyebrows, temples and ears. The case of this badass blonde is no exception. Since she poses as a fighter for a cause, her tattoos could be related to that. However, those green roots don’t seem to be connected at all. I like how the dots are very precise and black and the others are a little discolored. Often tattoo artists use different shades of black to obtain various effects.
12. Inked hairline and eyebrows
When someone takes tattooing seriously, he or she ends up like this guy. His hands are fully covered with tattoos and he went up on his neck and face with designs of his choice. His hairline is now nicely contoured with the head of a snake and other embellishments. His eyebrows maintain their typical shape, but they are now made of cubes. His look isn’t something we stumble upon every day. I really appreciate his uniqueness.
11. The butterfly and the crying moon
Men love butterflies too! That is just as cute as this actual butterfly. What intrigues me is the moon that has two tears under it. I don’t think we could mistake them for raindrops, because the moon has nothing to do with rain. Since the moon is in the shape of a C, it means that it is waning Moon. That could actually have a deeper meaning for this pretty boy. Although we don’t know which, we can enjoy his looks!
10. Rich Maori culture
The indigenous people of Aotearoa, New Zealand refer to a tattoo as moko. The design chosen by this dude has Maori elements in it, so he is probably very fond of their cultural heritage. As face tattoos, Maori designs are quite popular. They are met in men more than in women, which makes sense because they aren’t graceful at all. This particular design looks custom made for this man’s face. It starts being as wide as his lips and then it widens further. It might be connected with the tattoo located under his chin, but sadly that’s not visible.
9. Parallels with the jawline
This awesome chick chose a face tattoo that doesn’t seem to make sense. The line that is parallel with her jaw line doesn’t look connected with the text inked above her eyebrow. However, tattoos are art and art has no limits. She really likes to have stuff written on her body and she is a fan of big letters. You can easily see that if you take a look at her other tattoos. Is there something that you like as much?
8. Around the ear ink
The plus sign is often used as a tattoo by HIV positive people. However, that’s not a rule. This person might not have any disease, but he might simply find another meaning in the pluses that he decided to get behind his ear. The actual face tattoo is a part of a mandala, so maybe he tried to put one good vibe next to a less good one. The shading is nicely done with different types of black and grey.
7. Discreet face ornaments
This woman has a certain something that expresses delicacy, originality, personality and femininity. Her face tattoos are discreet, very small and not at all trashy. She has tiny stars and dots on her temple, forehead and chin. I believe that she also got a part of a flower on her forehead, but that’s not too visible thanks to her bangs. These tattoos definitely enhance her look and make her more interesting in a way.
6. Masculine all the way
Some tattoos are hard to explain when you don’t know the meaning behind them. What’s important about this guy’s face tattoos is that they accentuate his masculinity. His beard and the look in his eyes also contribute to his manly image, but so do his tattoos. The plus symbols might have nothing to do with HIV since they are so many. They could be part of a bigger picture that’s impossible to see without previous knowledge.
5. Tribal and biomechanical in one
Being pro body modifications doesn’t mean that we have a plan for our entire body. However, this guy looks like he’s got everything figured out. His face tattoos match the color and the style of his other tattoos. He’s also into implants, as you can see on his right arm. His style can be a combination of tribal tattoos and biomechanical tattoos. It can’t really be categorized; it’s more of a personal style I think. Tattooing one’s scalp is a challenge for any tattoo artist. People be crazy.
4. Lines like thorns
These chaotic lines look like thorns to me. They send a message of pain and spread on this person’s cheek and neck. On his neck, he got the word hurts inked, so I might be right about the lines expressing torment. His ear is also almost entirely inked. That’s not common at all! People do get tattooed on their ears, but not like this. It is a very intriguing pattern that obviously took a lot of work to be done. For other insanely cool tattoos for men, check out this link.
3. Asian naturalness with dots
I can tell for sure that this Asian beauty is a positive person. Dots represent positivity and so does the triangle she has inked on her cheeks. She is full of harmonious designs that aren’t great for her appearance only, but also for the way she feels. It’s said that a person who surrounds herself or himself with positivity will receive positivity. This theory is based on the law of attraction.
2. Happy girls with face ink
Anyone who blames tattooed people should see these happy girls! There’s nothing negative about them or about their face tattoos. They have different face tattoos. but all of them are tasteful and make them look great. Mandalas, hearts and warrior lines are all nicely inked and strategically positioned.
1. The new face of a new man
This guy is popular all over the Internet. He wanted to look completely different and he did all he could in that direction. His face is changed now compared to how it previously looked like and he is very content with the result. While this transformation is radical and it might even scare some people off, I think that his courage is admirable. He chose professional tattoo artists who really did their best.
